Description
The gates, gate piers, and flanking walls to The Cottage were constructed around 1835. The boundary walls, which support the terraced garden of The Cottage, are battered and made of rock-faced coursed sandstone. On either side of the recessed entrance to The Cottage, there are square section piers made of sandstone ashlar, featuring bands around the top. The taller walls of coursed sandstone angle inwards towards the gate piers, which are taller versions of the other piers. These gate piers hold what are likely the original wrought iron double gates, adorned with friezes of anthemion ornament. This structure is part of a notable group of listed buildings on Groombridge Hill, situated near Groombridge Place and the village of Old Groombridge.
