Description
The walls, gate piers, and gates at Pilton Cottage date from the early 19th century, with the gates specifically dated 1805 and 1824. The gates are said to commemorate a young soldier and have been refurbished in the last ten years. The walls are roughcast and topped with pantiles and ridge-tiles, while the gate piers are plastered. The gates are made of cast and wrought iron. The walls slope down to the gate piers, which are square in shape and feature moulded strings beneath tiered caps.
The gates are designed in an exceptional 18th-century style and include an overthrow. Each gate has a date panel below the middle, with the main verticals decorated with arrows, roundels, and pendant twists beneath the top rail. The left and right panels are topped with elaborate, lobed, mushroom-shaped finials. Above the top rail, scrollwork surrounds a double-headed eagle, and below it are wrought-iron initials believed to be DR. The overthrow is attractively designed with applied flowers in the scrollwork.
These walls and gates enclose the garden of Pilton Cottage at its entrance on Dark Lane, showcasing an unusually grand and finely crafted pair of entrance gates that exemplify exceptional ornamental ironwork.
