Description
The gates, gate piers, and walls to the northeast of Fonthill date from the mid-19th century. They feature wrought-iron gates and rough Plymouth stone ashlar gate piers and walls. The ornate double gates, approximately 3 meters high, hang from massive gate piers that are about 4 meters high. These piers have moulded plinths, banded rustication, stepped and swept caps, and large ball finials. To the right, there is a wrought and cast-iron pedestrian gate, approximately 2 meters high, designed with a trellis pattern, accompanied by a simple pyramidal-capped gate pier. The gates are flanked by coped walls; the left wall is about 1.5 meters high and curves toward the road for approximately 15 meters, while the right wall curves for about 2 meters and is terminated at both ends by lower piers with stepped pyramidal caps and stone fleur-de-lys finials.
