Description

Hunter’s Lodge is an early 19th-century house, subsequently used as a restaurant, and remodelled in the mid-to-late 19th century. It is built of painted stucco with decorative Coade stone dressings, and has a slate roof with rendered stacks to the gable ends and central ridge. The house follows a double-depth plan and is designed in a picturesque Gothic style.

The exterior is of two storeys, with a symmetrical three-window arrangement. There are pointed-arched windows with ornate leaded glazing and Y-tracery, set within three forward-facing gables. The central gable sits above a pointed-arched entrance with applied Coade stone rusticated voussoirs and jambs. Flanking the gabled canted bays are similar applied quoins. A moulded string course over the ground floor is accompanied by an ornamented frieze, likely made of Coade stone.

The interior of the building was not inspected. Hunter’s Lodge is a highly ornamented example of an early 19th-century cottage ornée, and is one of a group of such buildings in the area.
