Description
The lychgate and walls, built in 1898, are located at the west end of St Mary's Churchyard in Pilton, Barnstaple. The lychgate is constructed from stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The surrounding walls are made of rubble with brick copings, all designed in a Free Gothic style.
The lychgate provides an archway from the lane into the churchyard and includes small rooms on the north and south sides. It is a single-storey structure with an asymmetrical two-window range and a central doorway. The embattled parapet, which has coped merlons and embrasures, rises in the center and is complemented by a moulded string below it. The central archway is three-centred with a double hollow-chamfered arch, flanked by two windows: a cusped quatrefoil with a hoodmould on the right and a lancet on the left. To the left of the archway, there is a small segmental-headed doorway. Above the archway, a date plaque indicates the year 1898. The rear elevation facing the lane matches the style of the lychgate and features a two-leaf plank door with ornamental strap hinges. The tall walls on the left and right enclose the churchyard on the west side.
