Description

Medelpad is a house and stable block located on Dark Lane in Pilton, Barnstaple, probably built in the 1840s. The building features a stuccoed mass wall, likely made from local stone rubble, and has a hipped natural slate roof with stacks that have rendered shafts. The stable block, which is attached to the northeast corner of the house, has a tiled roof and is stuccoed only on the courtyard side.

The property is situated on a steep hillside and has impressively tall walls facing Dark Lane. It is a double-depth house, two rooms wide, and faces south. The garden front is designed in a Gothick style with deep eaves and a symmetrical three-window arrangement that includes a central front door. The projecting porch has a hipped glazed roof and features two-leaf glazed doors with margin panes, along with an overlight that has segmental-headed panes and margin glazing. The ground-floor windows, which have hoodmoulds, are glazed to match and include moulded mullions and high moulded transoms. The left-hand window is a French window. On the first floor, there are three similar windows, with the central window being slightly narrower. A large four-light central attic dormer is glazed with small-pane casements that have margin panes. The rear elevation includes a tall central stair sash window with nine over twelve panes and first-floor windows with sixteen panes. The stable has a half-hipped roof at the north end and a loft leading door.

The interior has not been inspected but may retain features of interest. Historically, the house was formerly known as Ivycliff and was once part of a glove factory complex, as noted by Reed in "Pilton, its Past and Present."
