Description
Lake Almshouses is a row of four almshouses dating from 1863. They are constructed of red brick with bands of white stone, and have a slate roof with crested red ridge tiles. The chimneys are red brick, banded with white stone, with tapered stone caps; one is on each end wall, and the third is in the centre of the ridge. The building is two storeys high, with a four-window range and a shared doorway in the centre of each pair of almshouses. The architectural style is Gothic Revival.
The ground-floor windows have curved, slightly pointed arches constructed with voussoirs consisting of alternating red bricks and brick-like stones. They have plank doors; those at numbers 1 and 2 have patterned iron surrounds around the handle and keyhole, and each has a three-paned fanlight with chamfered wood glazing bars. The windows have three-light wood casements with chamfered wood mullions, and three panes per light, plus a transom light. The upper-floor windows are of two pointed arches, again with alternating red brick and white stone voussoirs. These windows rise above the eaves level, forming dormer gables with projecting shaped barge-boards, and each has a four-paned sash window. Both storeys have cill-level bands of white stone, and the upper storey has a band at the springing level of the window arches.
A stone plaque in the centre of the front of the building is inscribed "THESE ALMSHOUSES WERE REBUILT BY T. WREY HARDING ESQRE. OF UPCOTT. A.D. 1863.” The end walls have no openings, except for an inserted ground-floor window at the right-hand end. Bargeboards match those on the dormer gables. The interior was not inspected. The almshouses provide an early example of the polychrome Gothic style.
