Description

Lethbridge's and Davey's Almshouses is a row of six almshouses built around 1870. They are constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and the end wall is rendered. The roofs are slate, gabled at the ends, and feature stacks with clustered shafts and octagonal pots, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

The original plan for each unit was one room wide, with later service blocks added to the rear. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical six-window front. There are three projecting gabled porches, each with coped gables and four-centred stone arched outer doorways, which have square-headed hoodmoulds and facetted spandrels. The gables feature blank shields.

The rectangular windows are glazed with diamond leaded panes on the returns of the porches. Each porch has two plank front doors in four-centred arches, equipped with strap hinges and Gothic decoration. The ground floor of Nos. 1, 2, 5, and 6 includes bay windows with hipped slate roofs, which contain two-light mullioned windows with trefoil-headed lights. Other ground floor windows are similar but flush, featuring transoms and square-headed hoodmoulds. The first floor windows, located under coped gables, are two-light stone mullioned windows with trefoil-headed lights set in square-headed architraves.

The interior has not been inspected, but a tenant at No. 5 reports that the chimney pieces remain, although they are now blocked. This group of almshouses is an externally complete example of Tudor Gothic style.
