Description

St Anne's Almshouses are a group of almshouses built in the 16th century, restored in 1838, and partly rebuilt between 1907 and 1909 by architect W.D. Caröe. The structure is made of Heavitree stone, with parts rebuilt using brick, stone, and timber framing. The roof is covered with clay plain tiles, featuring gable ends, sprocketed eaves, and pierced ridge tiles. The building has brick gable-end stacks with corbelled brick tops.

The almshouses are arranged in an L-shaped plan, with the west end rebuilt in a free Tudor style during the 1907-9 renovations. The exterior is one storey with an attic. The ground floor is constructed of brick with stone dressings, including stone window frames, a plinth, and string courses, while the upper section features timber framing. The entrances consist of panelled doors with canopies supported by shaped brackets. The 16th-century wing on the left (east) has sash windows on the ground floor, 20th-century flat roof dormers above, and a chamfered arch doorway on the left. A stone arch connects the almshouses to a chapel at the left (north) corner.

The rear (south) side facing the road has a layout of 2:1:1:2 bays, with large two- and three-light stone mullion windows that include transoms. The central gable is timber-framed and has a brick stack. The right (east) side features a 16th-century stone range with sash windows, a gable on the right, and stone stacks that have been heightened in brick. The interiors have not been inspected.
