Description

Sidwell Street Methodist Church is a Methodist chapel designed by architect F J Commin, with reinforced concrete work by engineer Paul Cottancin. Constructed of brick and reinforced concrete, with some copper roofing, the large square chapel features an octagonal lantern that rises to a circular cupola, all designed in a rich Edwardian Baroque style with Art Nouveau details and glass. The tripartite street elevation is two storeys high, with a deep entry to the left under an oriel and pediment. The central section is lightly recessed with a segmental pediment. The brickwork is laid in stretched bond, and the walls may be cavity work, with all details, surrounds, and cills appearing to be in cast concrete. To the right, there is a second entry with a deep segmental hood, and attached at the rear is a school room or Sunday School, which has a lofty frontispiece crowned with a broken pediment.

The interior retains all original fittings, including a screen and doors near the street entry, pews, an organ and organ-case, pulpit, and holy table. The lantern, made of reinforced concrete with 'Palladin' windows, features eight heavy pendants and a balcony front with a decorative pierced front. This chapel is unusually rich and complete on a large scale, notable for its early use of reinforced concrete in both structure and details.
