Description

A row of four almshouses located at 28-34 Main Street, Newton Solney, was erected and endowed in 1876 by John Higgott. The buildings are constructed of red brick with blue brick and stone dressings, and feature a plain tile roof with decorative bargeboards and five ridge stacks. The almshouses are single-storied and symmetrical in their two halves. Each cottage has a doorway flanked by windows on its south side. All windows are fitted with wooden cross windows, while the doorways have plank doors with overlights, each featuring segment pointed heads with polychromatic arches. To the south, a low blue brick wall with rounded copings encloses the front garden, surmounted by iron railings supported by four square piers with pyramid caps.
