Description

Newton Park Hotel is a small country house that was built in 1798 by Francisco Bernasconi. It was remodeled in the mid-19th century by H Stevens of Derby, with further alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of rendered brick and ashlar, topped with hipped Welsh slate roofs and brick ridge stacks. It stands two to three storeys tall, with the north elevation featuring five plus eight bays. The three-storey, five-bay section represents the late 18th-century house, characterized by angle quoins and a first-floor band, along with a metope frieze. The central porch, now glazed in, has composite columns and is flanked by tripartite windows with plain sashes, with single sashes beyond, all having moulded stone surrounds. Above, there are five similar sashes.

To the left is an eight-bay 19th-century wing that includes a four-light late 19th-century mullioned and transomed bay window, and a late 19th-century canted bay with a parapet and ball finials, which is in front of a full-height canted bay that rises to an attic storey. The remaining windows in this section are plain 19th-century sashes. The south elevation of the main block has six irregular bays and features a full-length iron verandah in front of six tall plain sashes set in moulded architraves. Above, there are two tiers of 20th-century windows in single moulded surrounds that match the height of the two storeys. A conservatory is attached to the left, and to the right, there is a projecting mid-Victorian bay with a mullioned and transomed canted bay window, adorned with a decorative Jacobean-style parapet featuring crestwork and ball finials. The interior was entirely remodeled in the mid to late 19th century, and it includes stained glass in the staircase window and the residents' lounge.
