Description
The walls, piers, gates, and gate lodge date from the mid-19th century and form part of the setting for Pitmaston House. The walls are constructed of coursed limestone with ashlar piers and cast-iron gates. The gate lodge has a renewed plain tile roof and two tall diamond-shaped stacks with a stepped oversailing course and pots at the angle.
The layout is as follows: a quadrant wall, approximately 4 metres high and extending 12 metres, begins at the southern end; this is interrupted by a pedestrian entrance before meeting the T-plan gate lodge. Further quadrant walls, each approximately 6 metres long, lead to pairs of gate piers with double gates between. A boundary wall then extends for approximately 100 metres, with upwardly projecting cylindrical piers spaced at roughly 25-metre intervals and a cylindrical pier at the northern end.
The design is Victorian Gothic style. The gate lodge is two storeys tall and has a gable end facing the street. This gable end incorporates an oriel window on the ground floor with casements and a single-light window above, both with ashlar surrounds and sills; decorative bargeboards feature quatrefoils. The return side has three casement windows in raised ashlar surrounds. The rear entrance has a renewed art-glazed door in a chamfered architrave, accompanied by a single light in the gable. The pedestrian entrance has a renewed, ridged plank door within a cambered surround. The gate piers have traceried cross-gabled caps, and turret roofs. The walls have steeply-chamfered copings. The double gates consist of two levels of bars, with two quatrefoils between, upper tracery, and spearhead finials. This ensemble is a significant streetscape feature.
