Description
This is a pair of semi-detached houses built around 1820 to 1840 in Worcester. They were later extended between 1840 and 1875 with service ranges to the rear. The front facade is constructed of reddish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring flat arches of red, gauged brick. The roof is hipped and slate-covered, with two tall brick chimney stacks that have overhanging courses and decorative pots.
The houses are two storeys high, each with two first-floor windows and single-storey entrance ranges to either side, which extend to form service ranges at the rear. Their design is in a Classical style intended to resemble a single, larger dwelling. Throughout, the windows are 6/6 sashes set in plain reveals, with sills and flat arches. The houses have wide eaves.
The entrances are located on the returns, with the right-hand return featuring a four-panel door set within a round-arched reveal, over which is a fanlight with decorative glazing bars within a Doric porch with a frieze and cornice. There is an 8/8 sash window above the door. The left-hand return has a similar porch with a five-panel door and an 8/8 sash window over the door.
The interiors retain original joinery and plasterwork, including dogleg staircases with stick balusters, with only minor alterations made over time. The houses form a group with the adjacent property at number 45.
