Description
Ivy House is a house built around 1780, with later additions and alterations, including mid-19th century bay windows. It was constructed for Mr. Boughton, a nurseryman. The building features reddish-pink brick in Flemish bond and has a plain tile roof with end brick stacks that have oversailing courses.
The house is two storeys tall with an attic in the gable and has three first-floor windows. The first floor includes a central round-arched staircase 6/6 sash window in a flush frame, featuring Gothic glazing bars at the top and a round arch made of rubbed brick, along with imposts and a keystone. The rest of the first floor has 8/8 flush-framed sash windows with flat arches made of rubbed brick and raised keystones.
On the ground floor, there are two bow windows with 8/8 sashes that are curved in section, also with flat arches of rubbed brick and keystones. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a fanlight above, which has Gothic glazing bars, all set in a doorcase with an open pediment supported by slender corbel brackets. The building is topped with a modillion eaves band and has a 3/3 sash window on the left gable.
Inside, Ivy House retains original plasterwork and joinery, including four-panel doors. It features a dogleg staircase with early 18th-century rod-on-vase balusters with square knops, which are said to have been added in the early to mid-20th century. Ivy House forms a good group with No. 201, which is said to have been built for Boughton's son.
