Description
Powick Old Bridge is a historic bridge located over the River Teme and Laughern Brook, dating back to the 16th century with later restorations. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with some sections restored in red brick, and features pinkish-brown brick and ashlar copings. The bridge has five arches: three are skew segmental arches with cutwaters and pedestrian refuges, while two are round arches. Atop the bridge is a balustrade that stands approximately 1 metre high. A plaque on the bridge commemorates its significance during the English Civil Wars, noting that the first skirmish occurred on 23 September 1642 and the last major battle on 3 September 1651, both taking place on or near this historic structure. The bridge has been by-passed by a newer bridge built in 1837, and the two northern piers were destroyed by the Royalists in 1651.
