Description

The pair of semi-detached houses at 108 and 110 Bromwich Road are believed to have been built around 1830 as a single house for William Paine. They are constructed with painted render over brick, with plain clay tile roofs, with the left wing being slated. The roofs are hipped, and there are gable- and hip-end stacks with oversailing detail and some decorative pots. The houses have stone sills and feature a wrought-iron porch.

The building follows a double-depth plan with paired central entrances and staircases. The symmetrical elevation is three storeys high with a cellar, and is flanked by two-storey wings. The front elevation has five first-floor windows arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, with 8/8 sash windows to the right wing and a 6/6 sash window to the ground floor of the main house. All windows are in near-flush frames; the original sash boxes are believed to remain in the left house. A further window is blanked on the second floor. A stone step leads to the 6-panel entrance door of the left-hand house, with the bottom panels being flush-beaded and the others raised and fielded. The right-hand door is a 20th-century replacement. An open porch with scroll and lattice-work and a low-pitch roof, possibly dating to the early 19th century, is present.

Inside, the left house (No. 110) retains original features including a staircase with square balusters and a wreathed handrail, 6-panel doors, panel architraves with decorative paterae in the top corners, skirtings, and decorative plaster cornices to the wing.

The houses were identified on maps from 1835, 1902 and 1928 as 'Bromwich Farm'.
