Description
No. 63 St Johns is a terraced house that has been converted into a shop on the ground floor. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of painted brick and features a plain clay tile roof that is hipped to the right, with dentilled eaves. There is a stack on the rear roof slope, which has an oversailing detail and pots. The house has a single-depth plan, and the left-hand side of the ground floor was originally a vehicular access to the rear of the properties, but all internal walls have now been removed.
The building is three storeys high and has three first-floor windows arranged in a 1:2 pattern, all of which are 6/6 sash windows set in near-flush frames with sills and under cambered brick arches. The ground floor has been altered in the mid to late 20th century. There are two large gabled dormers on the left side, each with paired 3-pane side-hung casements. The upper floors have not been inspected.
Historically, a through passage is shown on the 1886 Ordnance Survey map, and a planning application from 1959 indicates that the passage was still in existence at that time.
