Description

The building at No. 1 Malvern Road, currently occupied by Barclays Bank, is a house that dates from the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a stucco exterior over brick and has a hipped slate roof, along with three end stuccoed stacks that have oversailing courses and pots. The building has a double-depth plan with a central hallway and an extended two-storey service range at the rear on the left side. It stands two storeys tall and has two first-floor windows, which are 8/8 near-flush-frame, cambered-arched sashes with sills. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with an overlight that has decorative glazing bars and panelled reveals, all set within a Doric porch that includes a frieze and cornice with engaged pilasters. The building also features a stepped eaves band. At the rear, it retains an 8/8 cambered-arched sash and a 6/15 staircase sash.

Inside, the building preserves original joinery, including a four-panel, part-glazed door at the entrance and panelled architraves with fleurons at the angles. The property occupies a prominent corner site at the junction of Malvern Road and Bransford Road and forms a group with Nos 5 and 7 Malvern Road.
