Description

This is a probable 15th-century, three-bay hall house which has been altered and refronted over the centuries. It was originally Barclays Bank, now known as 36 and 38 (Old Bank Cottage) High Street. The north elevation retains timber framing with jowled posts and curved braces, but the front elevation has been faced with red and grey chequerwork brick on the ground floor and weatherboarding on the first floor. The roof is covered in Horsham stone slates with gablets. The windows are now 20th-century triple casements. Number 36 has a small modern wooden porch, and Number 38 has a doorcase with a flat hood. A 17th-century brick chimney stack is inserted on the ridge between the first and second bay from the north. Further chimney stacks are located to the right of the south gablet and at the north end.
