Description
This building, located at 40 High Street in Lindfield, is a house and three shops with origins dating back to the 16th century, although it has a mid-19th century exterior. The front elevation is stuccoed, while the north elevation is made of painted brick, and it has a slate roof. The structure is two storeys high and features five windows. The first floor mainly has 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has 16-pane sash windows. There are two early 20th-century shopfronts that extend out at the front.
The butchers shop, H J Box, is an infill building that is one storey high, stuccoed, and has a tiled roof marked with the year 1852. It features a double butchers shop front. The northern shop has large sash windows with horns and decorative scrolled wrought iron cresting on the flat roof. There is a door between the shop windows with two glass panels. Inside No 40, some framing is visible, including a jowled post, a cambered tie beam with one arched brace, and a deep moulded section of the wall plate.
