Description
No. 17 South Street is a house and shop dating from the early to mid-19th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building features a cement render over red brick and has a 20th-century pantile roof with a brick stack on the left end. It is two storeys high and has a three-window range of one-over-one horned sashes set beneath cambered lintels. The ground floor includes a similar unhorned sash window to the left and a central reeded wooden doorcase that supports a hood. A rounded arch with carved spandrels leads to panelled reveals, a six-panel door, and a fanlight, and there is also an 8-panel alleyway door to the far left. The shopfront to the right is supported by four pilasters and features an entablature with four curved brackets for the cornice hood. The frieze between the brackets consists of carved timber ventilator slots with meat hooks positioned at intervals below. The doorway to the left has a four-panel part-glazed door and an overlight. The shop window has two unhorned one-over-one sashes above a white-tiled fascia, which displays two decorative tiles depicting cattle in the centre. Inside, the shop is fully panelled in matchboarding and includes a cornice and meat hooks. This shop has been a butcher's since at least 1900.
