Description
Caistor War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated at Butter Market, at the junction of Market Place and South Street, surrounded by several listed buildings, including 22 South Street, 28 South Street, and 30 South Street, all of which are Grade II-listed.
The memorial features a stone Greek cross on top of an octagonal shaft that has a splayed foot. The shaft rises from an octagonal plinth that sits on a three-stepped base. The lower step of the base is higher on the southern side to accommodate the sloping site.
Inscriptions and names are incised on the plinth. The dedicatory text appears on three sides: the west face reads "TO THE/ MEN/ OF CAISTOR/ WHO DIED/ FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY," the north face states "DEDICATED/ A. D./ 1920," and the east face proclaims "THEIR NAME/ LIVETH/ FOR/ EVERMORE." The other faces list the names of those who died in the First and Second World Wars.
The memorial is enclosed by later metal railings, which are noted but not considered of special architectural or historic interest.
