Description

No 22 South Street, known as the WRVS Headquarters, is likely the former Sessions House built in 1662, as noted in the Churchwardens' Accounts. This building dates from the 17th century but has undergone alterations in the 19th century. It features painted brick construction with a pantiled roof, stone-coped gables, and brick kneelers, along with two brick wall stacks. The gable facing the street is two storeys high with garrets, and the gables were rebuilt in the 19th century.

The front has two bays with a central stepped and battered brick buttress, flanked by clasping angle pilasters that have plinths and sloping coped tops. A plinth runs across the front and steps up the sides of the building to accommodate the sloping site. An off-centre 19th-century six-panelled door with an overlight and segmental head is present, while to the right is a broad brick arched opening that was blocked in the 19th century when a tripartite window was added.

On the first floor, there are two 19th-century bordered sash windows, and in the garret, there are two additional similar windows with segmental heads. The long side elevations are divided into two bays by central pilaster buttresses; the lower parts include an arch and a rectangular light leading to an undercroft. The first floor features three 19th-century sashes with segmental heads. The South Street facade is rendered and consists of two storeys, with a mid-19th-century shop front that includes a half-glazed panelled door, a plain overlight, and a three-pane shop window divided by four pilasters, along with a fascia and cornice. On the first floor, there is a bordered sash window with a segmental head. This listing also includes No 22 Butter Market.
