Description

5 Market Street is a terraced house and shop dating from the 19th century. It features painted stucco with a slate close-eaved roof and a brick chimney on the left end. The building has paired square gutter brackets at the eaves and stands four storeys tall with a three-window range, where the right bay is spaced further apart. The upper floors have hornless sash windows, with 9 panes on the top floor, 12 panes on the second and first floors, and a plate glass sash window on the ground floor to the left. The centre and right sections of the ground floor have a 19th-century shop front, which includes a fascia and cornice over three pilasters. The left pair of pilasters frames the house door, while the third is to the right of the shop. The house doorway features a flush panelled 6-panel door with a thin overlight in panelled reveals, and there is a further door with margin lights behind it. The shop has recessed double shop doors to the left, with upper parts glazed and margin lights featuring coloured glass in the corners, along with a tilting overlight. The shop window has one plate-glass pane canted into the shop door and another to the front. The north end wall is slate-hung, and there is a rear wing with a cemented slate roof and a brick end stack. The interior has not been inspected, but the ground floor is used as a butcher's shop with tiled walls.
