Description
The Crypt is a Grade II* listed medieval vaulted semi-basement. It features rubble stone walls to the east and north, with a pointed doorway accessed by steps on the east side, and grey limestone blocks forming the jambs and voussoirs. There is an iron grille over the doorway, and a segmental arched square opening on the north side, also with an iron grille. The top is flat and paved, and a modern shop unit has been built above.
Inside, the space is entirely vaulted and has two aisles. The vaults are supported by two sturdy round columns made of cut stone, which have chamfered simple bases and caps. From these columns spring heavy quadripartite vaults that feature deep-chamfered ribs of cut stone, with rough rubble infill in the cells between. The ribs rise directly from the rubble stone walls of the chamber without the use of corbels.
