Description

2 High Street is an end-terrace house and shop, featuring unpainted roughcast and painted stucco, topped with an imitation-slate close-eaved roof and lacking chimneys. The building stands three storeys tall with an attic and has three closely set bays. It includes a hipped eaves dormer fitted with modern casements and top lights. The windows are set within 20th-century raised shouldered stuccoed surrounds and feature modern plate glass sashes.

To the right, the shop front and house doorway are flanked by three pilasters, with the one between the door and shop front being wider. There is an overall timber fascia and cornice above. The house door is a modern half-glazed design. The shopfront contains two large plate glass panes to the right of a 20th-century glazed door, which has an overlight. The left end wall is rendered and features a single four-pane sash window on the first floor to the right, alongside a short wing to the left that has a tall square chimney made of grey limestone rubble. Under the eaves, there is a twelve-pane sash window.

The rear of the building faces Dark Street and is rendered with four storeys and a gabled roof. The windows are positioned to the left, including a hornless twelve-pane sash in the attic, a large hornless twelve-pane sash below it, and a canted oriel window at the interior ground floor level, which has rounded angle shafts. To the left of the garage doors, there is a basement board door with a large cambered-headed overlight.

The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain a good full-height staircase dating from around 1700, featuring twisted balusters and a top landing with shaped flat balusters. The ground floor rear room includes a pair of 18th-century cupboards, with doors that have arched panels separated by fluted pilasters. On the first floor, there is a fine panelled room with a moulded chimneypiece. Additionally, there is a pointed barrel vaulted medieval cellar.
