Description
The building at 8 High Street was formerly a Post Office and features painted stucco with slate roofs. It has a large four-storey, six-bay facade that showcases ornate Italianate details on the original three-storey front. The windows are plate glass sash. An additional plain attic floor with six windows has been added, complete with a cornice and parapet.
The outer bays of the main floors project slightly, with cornices above the ground and second floors that break forward over these outer bays. The ground floor outer bays are framed by channelled pilasters and feature doorways with thin cornices and a roundel above. The doors are large, with nine panels. The central section is divided into three parts, featuring a broad central bay that corresponds to two windows above. This bay is flanked by thick channelled pilasters and has tall sash windows with pilaster jambs, a cornice, and a lunette above, all set within a moulded arch with a keystone. The central area has a broad lower sash window, which replaced former double doors with an overlight, flanked by pilasters and narrow blind side panels that were once side-lights, with a transom marking where the top-lights used to be. Above this is a cornice, slightly below the level of the flanking window cornices but aligned with the outer door-heads, beneath a blind rectangular panel with two squat pilasters and thin pilaster outer responds. The squat pilasters previously framed the royal coat-of-arms.
The next two floors feature channelled outer bays with a pedimented surround to the first-floor window and moulded architraves to the windows above on each side. The four-bay centre has two giant pilasters framing the central two bays, with first-floor windows that have flat cornices on console brackets and second-floor windows set in architraves. The second-floor sill band is broken for the pilasters and also breaks forward across the outer bays.
At the rear, facing Dark Street, the building has a four-storey, six-bay elevation with superimposed giant pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Four pilasters frame the basement and ground floors, while four slightly smaller pilasters frame the upper two floors. The top has a parapet, and each floor features six long plate glass sash windows. The basement has a door in the centre, with three windows to the left and two to the right.
The interior has not been inspected.
