Description

The Liberal Chambers, formerly the Liberal Club, is a two-storey building constructed in painted stucco with a roof behind a parapet. It features three bays in the Beaux-Arts classical style. The outer angles and the centre bay are framed by channelled pilasters, with labels under the cornice that breaks forward over each pier. The narrow centre bay is distinguished by an open pediment. The parapet has raised piers over each pilaster, and a taller parapet above the centre pediment, with the outer piers partly behind the main parapet piers.

The centre of the building has recessed French windows with a blind arch and keystone above, leading to an iron-railed balcony over a broad projecting porch. The porch is supported by channelled square piers with simple capitals. The outer bays contain plate glass sash windows on each floor, positioned closer to the centre bay, with moulded sills. The centre entry is recessed and features double doors.

At the rear, facing Dark Street, the building is constructed of rubble stone and has three storeys with a close-eaved slate roof. The windows feature brick cambered heads, with nine-pane sash windows on the top floor on each side and a lower centre stair light. The first floor has plate glass windows, while the lower stair light has 12 panes. There are basement windows on each side of a tall cambered-headed doorway, which has a 20th-century door, overlight, and boarding above.

The interior has not been inspected.
