Description
No. 21 Fountain Street is a house that was built in 1755 and later converted into a Liberal Club, now serving as flats. The exterior features incised stucco on brick and a graduated Lakeland slate roof in the Palladian style. The building has three storeys and an attic, with four windows and a projecting two-storey, two-bay entrance extension on the left. There is a 20th-century door in the right bay, and the windows have been renewed in their original openings, featuring raised surrounds and stone sills. The first floor acts as a piano nobile with longer windows and a sill band. The eaves cornice is complemented by a full-width pediment that has a recessed lunette in the tympanum, and a flagpole is mounted on a corbel below the eaves. The entrance section includes a tall round arch with patterned ironwork above, leading to steps that rise to a deeply-recessed original door, which is topped by a tiny lunette in the right bay. The left bay has 20th-century garage doors beneath two pivoted windows. Inside, while now converted to flats, many 18th-century features remain, including the staircase, chimney-pieces, numerous six-panel doors, and a half-domed elliptical alcove with rich mouldings.
