Description

The Liberal Club, located at 37 High Street in Crediton, is a house that has been converted into a club and offices. It dates from the late 18th century and features a rendered exterior, with part of the right side being slate-hung and a slate roof. The building has end stacks with brick shafts. The layout consists of a double-depth plan with a central entrance leading into a passage, where the main stair rises to the rear right, and a service stair is located off the passage to the right. A 20th-century ground-floor hall has been added to the rear.

The exterior is three storeys high with a basement and presents a symmetrical three-bay front. It is flanked by pilasters with grooved rustication and has a moulded cornice below the parapet. The porch, elevated above the street, features two flights of steps leading up to it, with a snecked local volcanic trap wall in front that has granite quoins. The flat porch hood has a moulded cornice supported by two distinctive granite columns. The front door is recessed and consists of six panels with panelled reveals and an overlight featuring geometric glazing bars. The original windows have moulded architraves, with large 8/12-pane sashes on the ground floor and outer first-floor windows, while the centre first-floor window has a 6/9 configuration. The second floor has 16-pane outer sashes and a 12-pane sash in the centre. A 20th-century door has been inserted at the extreme right of the ground floor.

Inside, notable features include joinery details, a stick baluster stair with a wreathed mahogany handrail, panelled shutters, and plaster cornices.
