Description

The Conservative Club is a house that has been converted into a club and offices. It dates from the late 17th century and features alterations and additions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is rendered and has a plain-tile hipped roof, with purple brick lateral and valley stacks. It is designed in an H-plan and has two storeys plus an attic, arranged in a 2-3-2 bay configuration.

The front of the building is nearly symmetrical, showcasing rusticated alternating quoins, a string course, and an elaborate moulded cornice. The deeply recessed centre has a ground floor that is filled in by a single-storey addition with three windows, topped by a panelled and balustraded parapet. The left wing features a panelled door with an overlight located in the second bay. The windows on the ground floor are late 19th or early 20th century, with two lights and glazing bars, while the first floor has casements and a central French window.

The return sides of the building have two lateral stacks, and the left side includes two pedimented two-light dormers. The rear of the building is irregular, with part of the centre recessed beneath a continuous cornice and a separate roof. The left wing has a large 19th-century sandstone ashlar canted bay with a moulded cornice and French windows, while the right wing features dormers. Inside, there is a notable late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters.
