Description

The Old Swan Inn is a public house located on Long Street in Atherstone. It dates from the early to mid-16th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber-framed structure with close studding and plastered infill, along with a high colourwashed rubble plinth on the right side. The first two bays are rendered, while the rear has been rebuilt with wings added in whitewashed brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has 20th-century brick ridge stacks.

The building is U-shaped with wings at the rear and stands two storeys tall, comprising a five-window range. The first bay is jettied and gabled. A 20th-century half-glazed door with an overlight is framed by a moulded surround. An early 19th-century segmental bow window features a curved 20-pane sash, supported by moulded wood pilasters and an entablature, with a 20th-century metal casement window above. The second bay contains 4-light leaded 20th-century casements.

The right part of the building showcases exposed framing and a jettied first floor, supported by some curved brackets and two curved braces. There is a half-glazed four-panelled door with an early 19th-century moulded wood surround and a flight of steps. A 20th-century projecting window on brackets is located to the left. The structure also includes two old canted bays with 3-light wood mullioned and transomed windows, while the first floor has a mix of 2- and 3-light wood and iron casements, most of which are leaded.

The right return side displays jowled posts, although much of the framing has been renewed or is of a sham nature. Inside, there is an altered open fireplace and some chamfered beams, one of which features an ogee stop.
