Description

Part of Atherstone Upper School, this building was originally a house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features a pebbledash exterior with rendered dressings and has an old plain-tile double-span roof without chimneys. The building has a double-depth central staircase plan and stands three storeys tall with a three-window range, plus a one-storey one-window range to the left.

The symmetrical front displays rusticated alternating quoins and a moulded cornice. The entrance includes a six-panelled door with a fanlight and panelled reveals, framed by a Tuscan doorcase with half-columns and a fluted entablature featuring corner roundels. The ground floor is adorned with mid-19th century twenty-pane sash windows in rendered surrounds, which have chamfered pilasters with ornamented bases and an entablature. Above, the second-floor sashes are six-pane and have moulded surrounds.

The one-bay range has a colourwashed render, moulded cornice, and a parapet with a raised balustraded central section. Mid-19th century cast iron railings with classical ornamentation, including scrolls, are attached to the building. The former garden front at the rear has similar detailing, featuring a half-glazed door with a doorcase supported by pilasters. The rear also has sash windows with 15 panes on the ground floor and 9 panes on the second floor, as well as a central round-arched sash with a surround that includes half-columns. The one-storey range at the rear has a plain-tile roof. The interior has not been inspected.
