Description

North Molton County Primary School is a school building dating from around 1850, constructed from snecked dressed sandstone with painted ashlar dressings, and rendered at the rear. It features a hipped scantle-slate roof and has an asymmetrical T-plan layout. The main range is aligned approximately north-south and faces west, with a rear wing that has opposed entrances.

The exterior showcases a symmetrical four-window front on the west side, featuring mullioned stone windows with three trefoil-headed lights under square heads, complemented by returned hoodmoulds and flat stone-arched heads. The left-hand ground-floor window has a 20th-century concrete lintel. To the right, there is a chamfered segmental-pointed arched doorway with trefoil-panelled spandrels, a returned hoodmould, and a flat stone-arched head. The doorway has a boarded door with a wooden tympanum above, accessed by five steps with low dressed-stone walls on either side. There are blocked doorways between the second and third and the third and fourth windows from the left, indicating former entrances. The left and right ends of the main range also have mullioned stone windows on each floor, each consisting of three trefoil-headed lights with returned hoodmoulds and flat stone-arched heads. The rear wing has opposed boarded doors, with the southern door featuring a four-part rectangular overlight.

Although the interior was not inspected, old postcards reveal that the school originally had diamond-leaded lights, which have since been replaced by 20th-century metal centre-hung casements.
