Description
Ivy Dene and School Villas is a building that was originally a school and is now divided into two dwellings. It likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone and features a stone slate roof with some composition tiles.
The building has a T-plan layout, with the main range oriented along an east-west axis and a wing extending to the south. It stands two storeys tall and has a four-bay facade on the north side. Notable architectural features include a first-floor band that runs around the building and coped gables that retain the stumps of apex and kneeler finials.
Prominent on the north side are large, almost semicircular arched mullion-and-transom windows, with one at each end. The centre of the north side features 20th-century (or restored) coupled cross-windows, a two-light mullioned window beneath a gablet above these, and a gabled porch at the west end with a small two-light window above. The east gable has an arched eight-light window on the ground floor and a six-light mullion-and-transom window above it. The south wing has a similarly arched six-light window on the first floor and a three-light mullioned window on the ground floor. There is also an arched six-light window on the ground floor of the bay beyond, which has a three-light mullioned window under a gablet on the first floor.
Additionally, the east angle of the wing features a 20th-century glazed porch leading to an inserted doorway. The east side of the wing has a three-light mullioned window on the ground floor, a stop-chamfered one-light window, and a square sunk panel on the first floor. The west side has a wooden lean-to porch at ground level and a one-light window above. The building is topped with two ridge chimneys and a gable chimney at the west end. Ivy Dene and School Villas forms a group with The Old School House, which is now connected to its west end.
