Description
The Retreat is a small house and attached cottage, now functioning as a single dwelling. It dates from the early 18th century, with a date of 1719 noted inside. The building is constructed of handmade red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a sandstone rubble plinth and a stone slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with small extensions at the back.
The structure is two storeys high and has a total of three windows on the upper floor and one window on the lower floor, making the house double-fronted. The right side, No.4, has a doorway that is offset to the left, featuring a wooden frame, a board door, and a one-course flat-arched head. It also has two 3-light small-paned casement windows on each floor, all with flat-arched heads; the ground floor windows are made of gauged brick. The left side, No.6, has a similar doorway and one similar window on each floor to the left. There is a ridge chimney at the junction of the two sections and a gable chimney to the right.
Inside, the building features stone-framed fireplaces, and one doorcase on the ground floor is inscribed with the date 1719.
