Description
The Red Lion Inn is a public house located in Newburgh, likely dating from the 18th century, with later additions to the rear that now include part of a former cottage on the left side. The building features white-painted roughcast, probably over brick, and has stone slate roofs. It has an irregular plan with a former single-depth two-bay front range, one bay of the cottage to the left, and various additions at the rear.
The inn is two storeys tall and has a total of four windows on the front, with the principal element being almost symmetrical. There is an altered doorway at the center, with an inserted two-light casement window above it. At the ground floor, there are two low five-light casements, and at the first floor, there are two segmental-headed three-light casements, along with gable chimneys and a broad signboard positioned between the floors. The former cottage to the left has two low storeys, each featuring one three-light casement window, with the upper window being segmental-headed.
At the rear of the main range, there is a taller and deeper addition, along with an altered and enlarged rear wing. Inside, the building has been remodelled, but the front range still retains some original beams. The Red Lion Inn is included for its group value.
