Description

Lys Cottage, originally a farmhouse and later divided into two cottages, has been recently restored to a single dwelling. It dates to 1691, with alterations made in the late 18th century and subsequently. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with a sandstone rubble plinth and a stone slate roof. The L-shaped plan comprises a two-unit baffle-entry main range and a projecting two-unit wing. It is two storeys high with a 1:2 window arrangement. A two-course band sits on a corbel table. The main range features a doorway in line with the chimney stack between the bays, and an inserted doorway to the right. A 20th-century hipped slate canopy covers the inserted doorway. Ground floor windows are two 18th-century casements; first floor windows are two low three-light casements, all with raked stone sills and large wedge lintels. The wing has a window of two square four-pane lights wrapping around the inner corner at ground floor, with plain stone surrounds. A first floor gable window is a three-light casement, offset to the right, with a raised sill and depressed arched head, under an unusual arch band of projected headers. Above this is a decorated datestone bearing a fleur-de-lys and the letters "E S. 1691." A ridge chimney, a gable chimney to the right, and a parlour chimney are located at the outer corner of the wing. The rear of the building has been altered. Inside, there is an inglenook with a heck and stop-chamfered bressummer, quarter-round moulded beams, a collar truss in the main range with wattle-and-daub infill, and a principal rafter truss in the wing. It forms a group with No. 5 (Moorcroft House) to the right.
