Description

Old Orme Boys' Primary School is a school building constructed in 1850. It is made of brick with an ashlar-faced main range and features sandstone dressings, topped with a tiled roof that has scalloped bands, ridge cresting, and a fleche. The building has an E-plan layout, consisting of a two-storey main range with five bays, each featuring a gabled dormer. The central bay contains a doorway with a moulded four-centred archway, and the windows are mullioned with moulded hood moulds. The outer bays are higher, with the right-hand bay showcasing a canted and buttressed bay window that includes lancet lights with foliate spandrels. The left-hand bay features a large mullioned and transomed arched window with foiled lancets and a hood mould. The gable apexes are adorned with lancet lights and heraldic emblems. There is an additional bay to the left that may be a slightly later addition. The gables are coped with kneelers.

To the Orme Road side, there is a wing consisting of four buttressed bays, which also has mullioned and transomed windows, along with a flat porch that features an embattled parapet. A string course with gargoyles runs along the building, and there is a stair turret at the angle. At the rear, a bell cote is present, featuring a leaded apron over a wooden structure with a tiled roof. The school is elevated above street level, supported by a rusticated retaining wall with crocketted coping at the angle piers and wrought-iron railings.

The school was established as a charitable foundation, stemming from a charity founded in the early 18th century and revived in 1850.
