Description

The Independent Chapel and attached Sunday School, located on North Street, was built in 1827 and 1837 respectively. This nonconformist chapel is now disused. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a moulded rendered cornice and parapet at the front, along with a brick dog-tooth cornice on the return sides. It has a hipped slate roof and is two storeys high, with a layout of one central bay flanked by two outer bays. The slightly projecting centre has a higher parapet that includes the remains of an inscription reading 'INDEPENDENT CHAPEL 1827' in relief on a moulded panel. The entrance consists of double-leaf doors and a fanlight set within a rendered archway, which is adorned with banded rustication, Ionic half-columns, and a rusticated arch surrounded by an outer arch. The windows are round-arched iron with glazing bars and gauged brick arches, although the ground-floor windows are boarded up. The return sides have three widely spaced bays. Inside, there is a gallery on three sides supported by cast iron columns with moulded panelled fronts. The attached Sunday School, positioned at right angles to the rear, features a slate roof with pedimented gables and a large brick dentil cornice. The pediment displays an inscription in relief stating 'SUNDAY SCHOOL ERECTED 1837'. This structure is also two storeys high and consists of two bays, with segmental-arched cast iron windows that have glazing bars.
