Description
The Congregational Chapel and attached school, marked on the Ordnance Survey map as the Congregational Church, were built in 1841 and 1868, respectively, as indicated by datestones. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish stretcher bond on a sandstone plinth on the north-west side of the chapel, with plain tile roofs. They are aligned from south-west to north-east.
The chapel features a gabled front facing School Road, with a dentil eaves cornice that extends to the ridge. There are blind windows with plastered stone cills and lintels on either side of a central recessed round-headed doorway, which has a wooden tympanum and plastered stone keystone and imposts. Above the doorway, there is a round-arched window with original shutters. The long sides of the chapel have three bays, with windows in the first and third bays, also featuring original shutters.
The attached school is located to the south-west and is a single-storey structure with dentilled eaves. It has two windows on each of the long sides and an integral stack at the gable end. There is a gabled porch aligned with the main building on the north-west side and a lean-to that houses a double-seated earth closet against the gable end. The interior of the chapel was not inspected. The building is included in the listing as a complete example of its kind.
