Description

The White Swan Public House is a building located on High Street in Crediton, likely dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick, which is painted, and has a slate roof with a brick stack at the right end. The building has a double depth plan with a cartway on the right side.

The exterior stands three stories tall and features a three-bay front with regular window arrangement. To the right, there is a segmental-headed cartway that includes a pair of well-crafted doors, probably from the late 18th century, each with six panels; the upper panels are fielded while the lower panels are flush. On the left side, there are pilasters and a fascia above the bar window and door. The bar windows display engraved glass that reads "White Swan Hotel," and the windows flanking the door have glass painted with swans. The door to the right has steps leading up to it and a blocked overlight; this door has been replaced with a glazed version from the 20th century. To the left, there is a two-light bar window with a third light on the inner return. The first floor features three 12-pane sash windows, while the outer windows on the second floor are 3/6-pane sashes, with the center window being blind and painted with a brewery sign.

The interior of the ground floor has been altered in the 20th century, with partitions removed, but there may still be interesting features remaining on the first floor.
