Description
Trades Hall is a house that was altered into a Trades Hall and then a social club around 1830, with some changes made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with coursed squared sandstone on the sides and rear, topped by a slate roof. It has a double-depth, double-fronted layout with the entrance and staircase located in the center. The roof features a central flat section flanked by two spans, with ridges positioned at right angles to the street and hips facing the front. The left side of the roof includes a chimney stack on the ridge.
The building stands two storeys high over a basement and has five bays, complete with a plinth, a first-floor band, and a moulded cornice. The narrow central bay slightly projects forward and has a recent brick gablet that is set back behind the cornice, concealing a skylight. The entrance is approached by three steps and features a moulded architrave beneath a cornice supported by fluted consoles that rise from panelled pilaster strips. The door itself has eight panels. All windows have plain reveals and have been replaced with recent top-hung casement windows that include glazing bars, substituting the former sash windows.
At the left end of the facade, there is a short screen wall with a doorway that leads to a stone deck along the side wall, which is protected by decorated cast-iron railings and leads to a side door. There are also two additional doors below this in the basement. The rear of the building includes a full-height canted bay window on the right, featuring a large tripartite sashed window at ground level and a hipped roof. Inside, the hall contains an elegant geometrical staircase that is oval in shape.
