Description
No. 7 Fountain Street is a house that has been converted into flats, likely built in the late 18th century. The exterior features painted roughcast with painted ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and a symmetrical five-bay facade that rises two storeys plus an attic above a basement. The building includes a deep band above the cellar, bands above the ground and first floors, and a parapet with coping. The windows are sashed and have narrow painted stone surrounds, while the attic is illuminated by timber dormers. The entrance doorway is framed by an architrave and topped with a cornice supported by console brackets. There are chimneys on both the right and left sides of the building. Leading up to the entrance are two flights of six steps with nosings that lead to a central landing; however, the original railings have been replaced by a mid-20th century red brick wall. Inside, the property features doors with raised and fielded panels, and a dogleg staircase with a ramped mahogany handrail, open string, turned newels, and stick balusters of rectangular section.
