Description

No. 13 Fountain Street is a house built in the early to mid-19th century, likely by Websters of Kendal. It features painted roughcast with painted ashlar dressings, a limestone ashlar plinth, and slate roofs. The building has three storeys and five bays, with the left-hand bay projecting forward and featuring a carriage entrance and a gable. Above the two right-hand bays, there is another gable, which may have been added later. The second-floor windows in these bays are taller than those in the two bays to the left. The windows are glazing-bar sashes with painted surrounds, and there is a sill band on the first floor. The carriage entrance has a plain stone surround with an elliptical arch, moulded imposts, and a keystone. Three stone steps lead to the doorway in the fourth bay, which is framed by engaged Tuscan columns and a Tuscan pediment.

Inside, the dogleg staircase has an open string, stick balusters, and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The doors are panelled, with the borders formed by applied astragal mouldings. The left-hand front room on the ground floor features a marble fireplace surround, now painted, with engaged unfluted Greek Doric columns. The room above on the first floor contains a fireplace with a hob grate and a marble surround decorated with reeding and anthemion motifs.
