Description

No. 20, Princes Street is a pair of houses dating from the early to mid-19th century, likely designed by Websters of Kendal. The main house is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The symmetrical facade comprises two storeys and three bays, featuring a plinth, a sill band to the first floor, and a gutter cornice with deep hollow moulding. The windows are glazing bar sash windows with margin panes, set within recessed surrounds. The limestone doorcase has engaged Tuscan columns and a projecting cornice, leading to a six-panel door with the upper four panels glazed and the lower two featuring reeded borders. There are three external steps leading to the entrance. Gable chimneys are present.

To the left of the main house is a lower wing, now occupied separately. This section is roughcast with limestone dressings. A blocked carriage entrance is visible on the left, featuring an ashlar surround and an elliptical arch. To the right of the carriage entrance is a later 19th-century timber canted bay window with sash windows. The first floor of this wing has two glazing bar sash windows with plain reveals and a sill band. A chimney is situated on the left. The gable wall facing Lightburn Road is slate-hung.

The interior features door panels with applied moulded borders and reeded architraves with corner bosses. An archway with panelled pilaster reveals separates the entrance hall from the rear stair hall. The stair hall contains a dogleg geometrical staircase with an open string, mahogany stick balusters, and a wreathed handrail. Both ground-floor front rooms possess marble fireplace surrounds. The first floor also features fireplace surrounds, including one of polished fossil limestone and one with a cast-iron hob grate.
