Description
This is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century, possibly designed by Websters of Kendal. It is constructed of stucco with a limestone ashlar plinth and a sill band on the first floor, and has a slate roof. The house is symmetrical, with two storeys plus an attic, and three bays wide. The glazing bar sash windows have plain reveals; those on the ground floor have low sills and 15 panes each, and are topped with stucco hoodmoulds. Gabled attic dormers have overhanging roofs supported by brackets, with scrolled brackets to the left and right of the casement windows and slated cheeks. The front door features six raised and fielded panels, a fanlight, and is set within a doorcase of engaged Tuscan columns supporting an open pediment. It is approached by three external stone steps with nosings. Chimneys are located on the right-hand gable and at the left, shared with the adjacent property at No. 20. Inside, the open-string dogleg staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The doors are fitted with panels bordered by applied mouldings and reeded architraves. The building plot was reportedly sold in 1813, and the house is depicted on a plan dated 1827.
