Description
This is a house, built in 1838. It is pebbledashed with painted ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The house is designed on a double-depth plan and has a symmetrical appearance with three bays over a basement. It features chamfered quoins and a moulded cornice gutter. The windows are glazing bar sashes with architraves. A central lunette window lights the attic, which is set within a gable treated as an open pediment. The stone doorcase is Tuscan style, with an open pediment, and contains a six-panel door with raised and fielded upper panels and reeded borders to the lower panels. A fanlight with intersecting glazing bars is above the door, which is approached by four stone steps with nosings. Low stone walls to the left and right carry iron railings with fleur-de-lys finials. Gable chimneys are visible. A Venetian stair window is included in the right-hand return wall.
Inside, the left-hand front room has a built-in mahogany cupboard with Gothick glazing and a grey marble fireplace surround with reeded pilasters. The front room doors have panels with applied mouldings. The rear stair hall contains a staircase with a closed string, slim turned balusters, and a turned pine newel. The Venetian window has fluted pilasters as mullions and a dentilled cornice. It is said the house was built as the residence of the workhouse governor.
