Description
Two houses, built in the mid-18th century. The houses are roughcast with painted ashlar dressings and a slate roof (the section over No.24 now uses artificial slates). No.22 has four bays and No.24 has two bays arranged to the left. The facade incorporates alternating quoins, a horizontal band marking the first floor, and an eaves band below a moulded cornice gutter. The windows have plain stone surrounds; the first-floor windows have brackets supporting projecting sills. The windows are sash windows, those in No.24 lacking glazing bars. The doorway to No.24 is in the left-hand bay and features a stone surround with a shallow cyma moulding and a moulded cornice hood. The door to No.22 is of six panels, with four raised and fielded panels and two glazed panels, and is approached by five steps with nosings. The door is set within a doorcase featuring a lugged architrave, a pulvinated frieze between fluted brackets with guttae, and a deeply moulded broken pediment enclosing a carved urn with gadrooning and a pine cone finial. The cornice gutter projects to form a rainwater outlet between the first and second bays. Chimneys are located on the right-hand gable, which has a coped top, and between the two houses. Inside No.22 there are panelled doors, a dogleg staircase with an open string, three slim turned mahogany balusters to each tread with columns acting as newels, and side walls panelled to dado height.
